{Tutorial} Making a Fanmix/FST: Part 2

See Part One

Okay! So I'm at the point where I have a playlist I'm pretty happy with. I've cut the songs that really don't fit, I know which songs are on it that I don't want in my own mix. But I still have 12 hours of music! Time to get serious about picking what's going to work.

I mentioned in the last post that I tend to note a few songs that strike me as "right" when I hear them. Unfortunately this doesn't tend to be a complete list. However, it is a place to start. So let's say I have the following songs noted for myself:
"Human" Civil Twilight
"Falling for You" Jem
"Lost my Faith" Seal

Okay, so I have have three songs there. Now I turn to my playlist and look through with a critical eye. When I can't quite remember the song, I click play and listen for a bit. This can eliminate songs pretty quick when I make myself think seriously about what will fit on my list. Eventually I get a list looking more like this:
"Human" Civil Twilight
"Blindness" Metric
"Lost my Faith" Seal
"Numb" Sia
"Letters from the Sky" Civil Twilight
"Mad World" Tara Maclean
"Falling Man" Blonde Redhead
"Love Doesn't Last Too Long" The Weepies
"Challengers" The New Pornographers
"Judas' Blood" Afterhours
"Silently" Blonde Redhead
"Falling for You" Jem
"Red Bull Attacks" America (The Last Unicorn soundtrack)

Note: This was not my actual list but I started this tutorial after I'd sorted it down farther

Now with this list, I am still running upwards of 20 or so songs. My next step is to check the lyrics (for lyrical songs). This is pretty simple. I type into my search bar (mine's Google): [song title] [artist] lyrics. I don't toss in " marks or anything else. This will generally return to you multiple options. I prefer the lyric websites of AZlyrics.com (b/c there are no pop-up ads), sing365, and 007lyrics. All of those sites you can copy/paste the text. SongMeanings is also an ok place although I've had more trouble there in getting the correct lyrics. Metrolyrics is a good website but you can't copy/paste text. In any case, you should somehow be able to find your lyrics. (Sometimes it is trickier, especially if you have ecclectic tastes.)

Now that I have my lyrics, I'm going to look and see if overall the feel/theme/tone of the song works with my theme (Cho/Jane, Mentalist). Let me show you a couple examples:

Keep? - "Letters from the sky" Civil Twilight
One of these days the sky's gonna break and everything will escape and I'll know
One of these days the mountains are gonna fall into the sea and they'll know
That you and I were made for this
I was made to taste your kiss
We were made to never fall away
Never fall away

One of these days letters are gonna fall from the sky telling us all to go free
But until that day I'll find a way to let everybody know that you're coming back, you're coming back for me
'Cause even though you left me here I have nothing left to fear
These are only walls that hold me here
Hold me here, hold me here

One day soon I'll hold you like the sun holds the moon
And we will hear those planes overhead and we won't have to be scared
We won't have to be, we won't have to be scared

You're coming back for me
You're coming back for me

You're coming back to me

My reactions/thoughts: I love this song. It's beautiful, a little haunting, and, well, I'll always associate it with Harper's Island since it's featured during one of the most intense scenes of the show. However, as I look at the lyrics and consider the images it brings up for me, this isn't a Cho/Jane song.

The decision: Ditch it.

Keep? - "Falling For You" Jem
Said there'd be no going back Promised myself I'd never be that sad Maybe that's why you've come along To show me, it's not always bad
Coz I can feel it, baby I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so
It's true I've become a skeptic How many couples really love Just wish I had a crystal ball To show me, if it's worth it all
Coz I can feel it, baby I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so Yeah I can feel it, baby I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so
And I've got to be sure Coz it's been so long And I cannot take the pain again If it all goes wrong
Coz I can feel it, baby I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so Yeah I can feel it, baby I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so
I want you so much I need you so much I want you so much I need you so much (believe me my love Believe me my love)

My reactions/thoughts: This is one of the songs that caught my ear while listening to my playlist. Actually, even before I made my specific playlist, I heard this song while net-surfing and was like "this would be great!" It's obvious to me this is going to be a good choice because there's a number of lines that stick out to me as working well:

"And I've got to be sure, Coz it's been so long, And I cannot take the pain again, If it all goes wrong" - Jane's a widower and he's definitely changed since the murder of his family. He would not enter a relationship lightly, and if he did, it would take a while to warm up to the idea of something perfect. "I feel like I'm falling for you But I'm scared to, let go" fits into the awareness I have that Red John and the threat he poses is going to hang heavily over any sort of connections Jane makes.

I'm also a big fan of "It's true I've become a skeptic How many couples really love Just wish I had a crystal ball To show me, if it's worth it all." I don't think Jane ever believed in psychics or magic, but he's far more cynical post-RJ. Despite this, I sort of have this head-canon that he does want something to believe in so this verse sticks with me.

The decision: Keep it!

What sometimes happens...: It turned out that I got caught up in looking at lyrics for additional songs by the same artist. In particular this happened while checking lyrics for songs by Blonde Redhead and The Weepies. 5/6 songs that I have on my current work-in-progress list weren't part of my playlist at all, but I was intrigued by the lyrics.

The song "Out of the Walls" by Tom McRae appeared on my list when I was looking at comment_fic for something to write. Turns out ruuger linked to the lyrics and a Youtube video as a prompt and I got caught up with how perfect it fit. You can find inspiration in fanvids, quotes that other fans pair with images/graphics, or in fanfic.

Semi-final list

I have a file with my song list and the lyrics for each, all handy and ready for the finalizing stage. :D (And now we're up to the step I'm literally at right now.)

Next up: Finalizing the fanmix arrangement and final-final song choices.
Onto Part Three!
