{Tutorial} Making a Fanmix/FST: Part 3

See Part One and Part Two

The last step of the music process - finalizing your mix songs and the order! :o

So my current workspace looks like this:

As you can see to the left, I have my text file open with my song list & lyrics. In my iTunes I've created a temporary playlist so I can play around with the order of songs and just listen to the things I'm choosing from.

ONE: So I'm listening, The Weepies are up first. Lyrics & music of "Little Bird" are quite lovely and it's staying on even though some of the lyrics don't quite mesh. "Living in Twilight" is a definite keep, I think. Re-evaluating "Simple Life" lyrics, though, doesn't strike me as fitting - I think I'm going to keep more of a canon feel to things and this song doesn't feel like it belongs, then.

TWO: Blonde Redhead songs up. I like the sound of "Anticipation" and the lyrics strike me as appropriate - both characters have difficult pasts and there's some bonding that occurs because of that. I also like the song for its good bit of instrumental. "Falling Man" now on... I'm a little torn because I think I added this on partially because it's one of the songs I know pretty well by the band and it's among my favorites. Looking at the lyrics, I'm feeling less sure of this choice, especially when I compare it to the lyrics of "SW." So "Falling Man" is cut, "SW" will stay in.

Three: Instrumental piece "Red Bull Attacks" (from The Last Unicorn soundtrack). Hmm. I like it but I don't think it's going to fit with the rest of the soundtrack. I can imagine this working well with some fic or another, though.

Current status: 10 songs

Four: "Lost My Faith" Seal - It's a go!

Five: "Undisclosed Desires" Muse - The chorus is dead-on. There's something about the sound of this song, too, that just hits me as being right.

Six: "Blindness" Metric - It's not the most perfect fit ever, but I like it and I think it'll sound good with the final mix.

Seven: "Numb" Sia - Lyrics + sound, yes this is definitely staying.

Eight Definite yes to both "Falling For You" by Jem and "Out of the Walls" by Tom McRae.

This is the tricky part and sometimes I can get really picky about it. So first up I'm going to pick out the lines of lyrics that I want to "represent" each song so I have a better idea of what I'm going to do.

"SW" Blonde Redhead It's not, it's not what you give but it's what you kept / It's not, it's not who you kill but it's who you left...It's not, it's not what it seems ... It's not what it seems / It's not, it's not what you leave but it's what you hold

"Anticipation" Blonde Redhead Dark place is your place / I take dark drive to your place / You're staring at me / You're staring with your inside eyes

"Lost My Faith" Seal We both know That the harder we try Can't understand it We're so caught up in the reasons why Station to station And we couldn't even say their names I realized it Was just a game

"Little Bird" The Weepies Sometimes it's hard to tell the truth from a lie / Nobody knows what's in the hold of your mind

"Living in Twilight" The Weepies No one knocks upon your door / Until you don't care anymore / A little alone but it's all right / We are always living in twilight and So I stumble home at night...With ghosts and visions in my sight

"Undisclosed Desires" Muse I want to reconcile the violence in your heart / I want to recognize your beauty's not just a mask / I want to exorcise the demons from your past / I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

"Blindness" Metric I was a blindfold, never complained / All the survivors singing in the rain / I was the one with the world at my feet

"Numb" Sia You made me smile today / You spoke with many voices / We travelled miles today / Shared expressions voiceless

"Falling for You" Jem And I've got to be sure / Coz it's been so long / And I cannot take the pain again / If it all goes wrong

"Out of the Walls" Tom McRae Wake up, love, bring the candles raise up the torch, / pour water in the ink of night, wash this darkness from my thoughts, / cos it comes out of the walls, it comes out of the walls.

Thoughts at this point: Not necessarily seeing a balance of songs where certain ones focus best on one character... (I sometimes will alternate songs based on that.) Nothing obvious is sticking out to me. I do have doubles of two artists, though, so I'll want to split those up.

After taking a break to focus on a few chats with friends and other things (all the while listening to the songs I've picked), I return to my list. Glancing at the lyrics this time, a couple songs catch my eye because I can see a timeline/progression. With that thought in mind, I divided the songs into "pre-relationship" to "building-relationship." A few minutes of playing and I have an order - not perfect, but I'm happy enough. I've got it! Listing: 1. "Blindness" 2. "Anticipation" 3. "Living in Twilight" 4. "SW" 5. "Little Bird" 6. "Numb 7. "Lost My Faith" 8. "Undisclosed Desires" 9. "Out of the Walls" 10. "Falling for You"

VOILA! Final mix is a-ok. Now I make sure that all of these files are MP3s, meaning they should play for everyone, and I'm ready.

Next Up: That flash of style! Cover art
Part Four

Loving the tutorial - really straightforward, and it's good to see how other people do this :)

You might do this at a different time, but at this stage I like to copy the files into a new folder so I have second copies distinct from their original albums, rename them as the fanmix album and change the track numbers they're listed under so that when people dl the mix, they don't have to go through and reorder everything into an album themselves, it does it automatically. It drives me crazy when the fanmix I just downloaded scatters all over my laptop like someone dropped it.

Yup, I do that too. ;)

Right now I'm taking a break from the tutorial. XD Didn't realize I was going to take so long! So now I'm browsing/saving screencaps before I do cover art. ;)

Then, yes, I do have to do the tech stuff.

I can't wait until Part 4! I have three fanmixes sitting on my computer because I don't have any cover art for them. Hopefully your tutorial will help - I found myself nodding in agreement with the other parts. :)

Aww, glad you're finding it helpful/agreeable. ;)

I'm not sure how the cover art tutorial is gonna go, actually. I finally got done obsessing over promo photos for use. Now it's obsessing over all the rest. :p Might be doing post-deconstruct info on the finished product. :p WHO KNOWS!
