SPN is going to break me

So if you don't follow me on Twitter or Tumblr or otherwise know me outside of LJ, this is probably the first you've read of me getting into Supernatural. And, whoa, have I gotten into it.

Watching so far: Saw about six episodes on May 15 (so Sunday before last) and had finished the first season by the end of Monday. Finished S2 by last Thursday, when I slowed up to start watching S3 with a friend. J had seen 3 in a random bits and pieces when first airing (so during the writer's strike) and hasn't really seen any episodes since. So now we're at the point where we're both watching the episodes for the first time. Just finished s3 last night and have to wait until the weekend for J to be free to watch again. OH THE NERVE-WRACKING WAITING!

Fannishness: I have browsed the SPN tag on Tumblr and DeviantArt countless of times already in the past week. I have an entire folder of SPN gifs saved. I've started stockpiling SPN fanmixes I've found. I've watched a fair number of fanvids already. Oh, and I've been reading fanfiction since the middle of last week.

How SPN itself is gonna break me: I have no real inclination to avoid spoilers (as can be evidenced by the fact that I'm already reading fanfic, have looked through Tumblrs, etc.). This is extremely unusual for me. While I'm not spoiler phobic for any of my fandoms, I don't even have any hesitation to stop browsing for SPN. (Now Bones, I'm behind about a month and I still shield my eyes of recent discussion/quotes/gifs. Fringe I'm still trying very hard not to do more than skim a look at pretty pictures. Mentalist I am a little irked about putting myself into the position of knowing who plays Red John. >.> ) But not for SPN. I'm like "Oh whatevs - this is so-and-so, right?" Hell, I even turned to J yesterday as we were watching "The Mystery Spot" and asked if Sam could really kill the Trickster with a stake given who the being actually is. :p

So anyway, it is weird to be in this "ah, whatever" position in regards to storyline. Now, I'm still not one to go actively seeking spoilery details by reading in-depth summaries of future seasons/episodes. It just means that I happily look through picture galleries, catch some of the discussions that have popped up in my browsings, and I basically have a no-holds-barred sense with fic. So it's not like the story's really getting ruined for me. ANYWAY, moving on.

P.S. I've driving myself crazy while watching the show and going "nooooo stop, I can see the Wincest! DAMN YOU SHOW!" and then cracking up.

How the fanfic/fandom is gonna break me: (1) I'm totally setting myself up for a particular pairing at the moment *cough*Sam/Cas*cough* before I see things canon-ly. Now I'm hoping I really do become epic multishipper (well already I'm still pretty flexible, TBH) or change over to Dean/Cas like mad where most of my writerly friends are.

(2) The damn show meta's itself, which extends to the cast/crew themselves, and lends itself directly into fandom... and fanfiction... And DAMN YOU SHOW! I don't do RPF! I'm nudging this suspiciously with my toe, poking it with a stick, making faces at this entity of fandom that I have not touched before well there were those Pinto fics I've read... but I have to admit that I can feel my resistence crumbling and I might have to check it out.

I promise a post later this week that goes into why I haven't watched before, why I started watching now, and what my impressions are about the women in the show as well as some interesting observations about sexuality. :3

Wait do they know who Red John is? Or are they finding out soon? If so, I totally have to catch up with the Mentalist to watch that episode!

And yeah, the first 5 seasons of Supernatural are totally worth it!

The RJ thing I think is from the finale? I am a bit irked that a bunch of picspams/discussions/gifs abruptly flooded my Tumblr dashboard less than 24 hours after it aired last week. u_u I mean, it's my own fault for following the thing, but it's just kinda ingrained in my brain that there's like a day or two grace period. :p I don't even know where I pretend to get that idea from. o.0

Anyway - yeah, I'm really loving SPN. Totally hooked. I'm also really enjoying that I'm watching most of it with someone else. We can snark about things and then go "omg, did they really just say that?" Or debate if something makes sense. Or talk about the awesomeness that is the makeup department. (Seriously. Really nice job on the bruises!)

LOL! I'm not surprised you got sucked in. :P

Once you get through S4, you might want to check out my Somewhere Back of the Sun 'verse. It's Dean/Cas, but there's plenty of Sam, and it might be the best thing I've written.

Oh you are so bookmarked. ;D I'll for sure be checking out at least a couple things by folks on my flist. The only thing I'm actively avoiding is wincest. u_u As I was having one of my "argh! damn you fandom!" moments on Twitter, J told me not to think about it - so hard not to! So glad soon Castiel enters to help divert tension and attention. :p

And yes, the series definitely sucks me in. It gives me a nice horror fix, which was what I was craving last weekend. This is about the right level of horror for me, so it works well. ;)

"or change over to Dean/Cas like mad where most of my writerly friends are."

I... don't totally get Sassy. I think it's based on the idea of Cas as the "nerd angel," all bookish, but... he isn't, that much. He knows stuff, what with being an angel and all, but I think he's really more into cool weapons. Also, he and Dean share a profound bond. And the _looks_...

It's a shame you're spoiled for the Trickster thing, but I bet you still love Changing Channels. And how awesome was Mystery Spot? (The Trickster arc is my favorite; it really kind of sums up the evolution of the series. Standalone ep - Awesome ep with arc-y elements - Super-awesome hilarious ep with huge arc reveal - OH SHIT).

I... will save my comments on SPN women for that post. But you better not have anything bad to say about Ellen (ELLEN!).

LOL I shall be doing plenty of reading. I have a bunch of recs saved already + bookmarking the fic lists of bunches of writer friends. (ILU PEOPLE!)

I... don't totally get Sassy.

Fic can almost always explain anything... and well, I don't have canon ingrained in my head yet to block out the possibility - and I'm glad for that at the moment since I have read some wonderfully written pieces, even if I come to not care for it eventually. And really, how could I not at least take a peek at something named Sassy? I read that name and I start grinning and snickering.

I'm fascinated by the concept and really interested in watching the actual episodes to get the canon established in my brain. Tall Tales was just too funny - including one of my favorite elements of same story from multiple viewpoints. ;3 And I loved the poetic justice. I'm looking forward to Changing Channels, it looks ridiculous. XD

But you better not have anything bad to say about Ellen (ELLEN!).

Are you kidding?! I LOVE ELLEN! Kickass mother-figure, FTW! I like Jo, too. Hell, I like most of the women in SPN.

*tries to find a subtle way to self-pimp* *fails*

I... I was going to say that I don't object to Sassy, but that's not entirely true. Dean/Cas is my... half OTP? I can take Dean with others, but if Cas is with anyone it has to be Dean. Dean/Cas is still called "Destiel" in some quarters, if that helps. (Come on! It's practically got "destiny" right there in the name!)

Changing Channels is a delight. I'll know when you've watched it because there is a 75% chance that the subsequent post will be nothing but joy-crazed keyboard smash. Um. Not to oversell it.
May. 26th, 2011 04:09 pm (UTC)
LOL I know what you mean about being okay with one half of a pairing taking up with someone else, but not the other. I've felt similarly with a couple characters in the past. ;) And yeah, "Destiel" makes me giggle too - but they're Team Free Will, right? Against destiny? :3

I'm excited to get back to watching episodes. Jackie knows I'm getting fidgety so perhaps even as early as tomorrow we can get back to it. Saturday for sure. This would probably be a bit easier if I was already rooming with her, but I think the move won't happen 'til July. Oh moving, I will have to pack and be reasonably organized, ack!

Anyway. Wheee SPN!

I love you even more now, because not only have you written one of my favorite verses in CM, but you're now also getting into my most favorite show ever! I am like.. addicted to it.

SO. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask! Also, let me know what you think of the later seasons! Hope you enjoy them! :)
May. 25th, 2011 05:38 pm (UTC)

I knew that so many of the people on my various social networks know/love/follow/write for SPN, but it's still been amusing see everyone "come out of the woodwork" as I've announced my introduction to it. XD Apparently I've been entertaining with my Twitter commentary.

And hey, I'm always up for rec lists and such. ;D
May. 25th, 2011 08:20 pm (UTC)
I mostly read gen stuff, but I'm in love with Sassy (and I totally agree with your reaction on the name, it always cracks me up!) and J2 AUs. And hurt!Sam.. like it's crack. Seriously. So I'll take a look through what I have saved and give you some! What exactly do you think you'd be looking fooorrr?

I just recently got a Twitter account, mainly so I could clear out my bookmarks of the people I stalk on there, but if you don't mind, I'm gonna follow you :D
May. 25th, 2011 11:30 pm (UTC)
Gen would be spiffy! I mean that's how I prefer cannon :D Really I'll read anything except incest. I'm very open to pairings at the moment. I prefer the FPF to RPF, but as I've already admitted, I'll read some RPF too. ;)

Oh as for fic types, I prefer hopeful and happy endings. I don't like sobbing at the end. :< And my favoritest cliche/kink of all time is amnesia fic. My biggest weakness.

Yay for twitter! Let me know if you have a diff user name there so that I actually add you back :p
May. 26th, 2011 12:40 am (UTC)
... ooohhhh, I have the perfect amnesia rec for you. It's Jared/Jensen, though, but it's soooooooo well written that I've read it probably... three or four times?

I'mma look through all of my bookmarks and compile a list for you, then send it in a message! :)
May. 25th, 2011 07:57 pm (UTC)
Dude, what are you waiting for?! Watch the finale already! For real! Now, I have to go back to the first season to watch "The Mentalist" - but I am IN. Because of that finale, and nothing else. IN. I tell you!

SPN - I don't do Wincest, but if you are willing to let yourself into RPF, then Jared/Jensen is totally doable. There's always that fandom that ropes you into something you thought was squick-y, but kind of OK. Coming from a fandom whore like myself, it's nothing to be ashamed/afraid of. Go for it. The world needs more LUV.

For some reason I'll watch SPN if it's on the teevee. But I haven't actually watched it. Seems like every time I do Dean is dead and is in hell. Awesome show, whenever I remember to turn the tv on.
May. 25th, 2011 11:40 pm (UTC)
Lol! I am almost a whole season behind on TM. Only watched the first two eps and I know what happened to Bitchstina. I will catch up, but I've kept swearing I wanted to finish writing Roses are Red before that. ;;^^

I'm pretty open to any pairings in SPN right now except for incest. That will always squick me. Well, theres this ONE fandom I like, but the fam cnx is a huge spoiler anyway, and no one knew they were sibs... /ramble

I feel totally uncomfortable about rpf but at the same time I can understand the appeal and "justification." Still incredibly ackward but I am breaking thru my taboos. XD

You should watch SPN when you get some time, it is quite good. I've been impressed since I hadn't expected much going into it.

Anyway, I can't believe I wrote all this on my iPhone lol. Done for now!
May. 26th, 2011 12:49 am (UTC)

IPHONE!!!! Major envy.

I hope you're registered to vote in MN. Marriage equality is coming to a vallot.

Ahem. Totally switching gears - no such thing as a taboo. I used to think incest squicked me until I got into Troy fandom. Yes. I went there. And then I thought rpf was totally off limits until I got into lotr rpf. And then CM rpf. So yeah.

I think I'm going to watch SPN again. From the start - which I did until like, season 3 or something. Then it was like, how many times can earth be in armageddon? I get bored easily. And the attention span of an ant.

I do love my iPhone - and actually ended up getting it because my mom wanted it! We got ours about a year and a half ago when our old phones were going kaput and it was time for a change. She wanted a smart phone to be able to keep up with e-mail throughout the day since her work was cracking down more on internet usage but she still wanted to access things while at the office and not spend driving time during lunch to go to a coffee shop for wifi. Now I can't imagine living without it, it was a real godsend when I first moved to Mnpls and I still use it a lot to get around. It's also how I keep track of my schedule, is pretty nice to my music on-the-go, I finally text, and overall it's just great.

You can find the older ones (and even mine is a 3GS or sorta the second release, something like that) at a good price. I would like to get the newest one - largely because of the camera capability, TBH! But expenses, ugh, do not like them.

Voting - I'm still registered in WI, actually. I should change over to MN since it seems like I'm sticking around here, though. And yeah, important ballot stuff going on.

"Taboos." Haha, thanks for the pep talk! Yeah, there always seems to be some exception that creeps in, and I'm okay with that. There's still plenty of things that will always be squicky to me, and the whole incest area I actually have mapped out what exactly it is that gets to me. It's about the type of relationship. So like SPN? Dean and Sam are family, they've always acted like family, their relationship is totally sibling. (And dysfunctional codependence like whoa.) The HI fandom where I 'ship the two characters who are siblings doesn't bother me because they're relationship was always friendship, never related by family. Well, ok, he eventually found out about the bloodties a couple years before show events, but she didn't know, and their relationship was still never of the family type. /ramble

SPN, whee! Yeah, Jackie hasn't seen past S3 (hadn't even seen the finale). I would have "caught up" to her last week except that she hadn't seen the season in order and has missed several shows, so we just started watching there together. (Well, we'd watched the first six episodes of the series together, just to get me roped in. *g*)

And as I understand it, there's only one Armageddon (not quite the capital-A one, given that it's not of God's design) that is build-up through the first five seasons. It's interesting to have a show that knew its overall story arc and actually planned for it over the seasons! Helps with continuity (unlike, say, X-Files, where the mythology episodes eventually drive me batty).

Looking forward to babbling s'more about SPN. ;D Hope you'll join me.
